<br />
<br />
It's about about the author's struggle with gender inequality in traditional Christian settings, and (I assume) her journey to something more feminine or inclusive. I'll have to get back to you on where this journey is going. So far it's all about the struggle.<br />
<br />
My favourite part so far is when the author accidentally introduces herself as "Father Sue" whilst attending a monastic retreat. Mostly I liked that part because I think it's hilarious when people (including me) mess up their words*. It turns out to be a pivotal part of her journey, where Monk Kidd comes to the realization that her spirituality and way of being in the world are masculine through and through . . . so, that kind of spoiled the fun. The tone is pretty somber so far and the language is very formal. I'm not sure I'll love it, but I think what she is saying is important.<br />

<br />
<br />
This one is about prayer. It's about why it's important and how to do it well. The author isn't insistent on his way as the only way, which is a real rarity in christian books.The thing I like the most is that Hybels balances theory with practical suggestions. For me, that's a real plus. I have no problem theorizing spiritual matters, but I tend to get stuck when it comes to practice, and I rarely experiment with new ways of praying.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I recently finished <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/885022513X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=885022513X&linkCode=as2&tag=molisays-20&linkId=B7HF2U744PH6KD4F" target="_blank"><i>Romancing Miss Bronte</i></a> by Juliet Gael, which is a fictional biography of Charlotte, and it includes stuff about Emily and Anne as well. So now I'm all excited about the Bronte sisters--especially Emily--and I want to get into some more of their fiction. I love<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1238834/" target="_blank"> this film adaptation </a>of <i>Wuthering Heights </i>(hello, Tom Hardy), so I thought I'd give the book a whirl. I'm listening to the audio version instead of actually reading it. For some reason, classics are more appealing to me in audio, especially when they are read with a British accent.<br />
<br />
Right now I'm hung up on the fact that Emily uses the verb 'ejaculate' as a synonym for 'exclaim.' It's a great story (even without Tom Hardy), but it's absolutely peppered with ejaculate, and for the life of me, I can't seem to just grow up and stop being stunned/amused. To the casual passerby, it may sound like I'm listening to a medical textbook or some really polite erotica.<br />
<br />
4. I got about halfway through <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0812993276/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0812993276&linkCode=as2&tag=molisays-20&linkId=7GVDP2Z4OOD5FPBW" target="_blank">The Quick</a> by Lauren Owen and had to return the book to the digital library.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/515Rh7l0-4L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/515Rh7l0-4L.jpg" height="320" width="215" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm not as disappointed to part with it as I wanted to be. I got really into the first bit, and then it changed perspectives, and it lost a bit of its appeal for me. It proceeded to change perspectives, sometimes capturing my attention and sometimes not. I'm a bit confused as to whether or not I liked it. I guess I didn't fall madly in love with it, otherwise I would have bought it so that I could finish it, right?<br />

There are a million videos out there. I like this one because she uses the proper crochet terminology and talks about the abbreviations for the stitches too, which is helpful/essential for using a pattern. Also, it's super short and uncomplicated.<br />

3. <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/" target="_blank">Goodreads</a> has been a good friend of mine for awhile now. I started using it to keep track of books I've read, back in April, when I set a goal to <a href="http://molipopsays.blogspot.ca/2014/04/birthday-goals.html" target="_blank">read 15 books before I turn 33</a>. I've also found it super-useful for keeping track of books I want to read. And! There's a 'readers also enjoyed' bit on the sidebar, which I've found helpful for discovering new books I might like.Deniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365670590130398437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-296219186789242234.post-30943650101410346062014-11-05T15:55:00.000-08:002014-11-05T15:57:08.187-08:00Sewing Supplies: ScissorsI was <i>that</i> kid--the one who was excited to go back to school. Part of the excitement was new school supplies. It's an excitement that carried over into my University years, and even when I didn't have a lot of cash, I would have something new for the first day of school (often it was <a href="http://molipopsays.blogspot.ca/2014/08/diy-thread-bound-notebook.html" target="_blank">handmade notebooks</a>).<br />
<br />
Nowadays, sewing supplies have taken over where school supplies left off. I'm always excited for new sewing supplies and notions--even thread! Besides my actual machine, my scissors are the most used supplies in my studio. I have 3 pair that I use regularly for sewing, plus a rotary cutter, and pinking shears. Oh, and I always keep a pair of paper scissors nearby, so that I'm not tempted to dull my sewing scissors on paper-crafts.<br />

<br />
These are for the heavy-duty jobs--I use these for cutting canvas and for multiple layers of fabric. They're great for my slippers, because there is a step in the making where I have to trim though two layers of interfaced fabric, a layer of 14 oz canvas, and a layer of fleece batting. I can do it with a well-sharpened standard 8" shear, but it takes a lot of elbow grease. My little brother got me these for Christmas one year, and they have saved me a lot of hand-aches through the years.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
If I could only have one pair, I'd choose the 8" Fiskars, because they're the most versatile. Some folks swear by the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B7MUEG/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000B7MUEG&linkCode=as2&tag=molisays-20&linkId=LLZHBQSRVBIBYUAB" target="_blank">spring action type</a>, but I find that they don't corner as well, and they're a little bit clumsy. That's just me though! The other scissors make my life easier, but the 8" ones are absolutely necessary.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Thread Snippers from Fabricland:</b><br />

<br />
These guys are always at my right hand. Thread snipping is a constant reality in my life, and these guys are spring loaded, a feature that I appreciate in a thread snipper, even if I avoid it in a standard pair of shears.<br />
<br />
Pinking Shears from Fabricland:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5yTpQ5nrPYLnMElpQUv0ObmL97_D6t1LThPvnJuvjn06RMvXJhUaNRue5Th4dNIF0Lg6rgYLoA2Y-DjSX8YQX2klObtAMEBRYZq5zs0B14pfN4x46npmLHDHFDnDDo4IeK7MNZzpuTXtH/s1600/scissors3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5yTpQ5nrPYLnMElpQUv0ObmL97_D6t1LThPvnJuvjn06RMvXJhUaNRue5Th4dNIF0Lg6rgYLoA2Y-DjSX8YQX2klObtAMEBRYZq5zs0B14pfN4x46npmLHDHFDnDDo4IeK7MNZzpuTXtH/s1600/scissors3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Pinking shears can be used for trimming anything that you don't want to fray or unravel. I mostly use them for when I need to cut close to a seam that I'm not going to finish, like around a corner that I'm going to turn inside-out.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B7M8WU/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000B7M8WU&linkCode=as2&tag=molisays-20&linkId=SALNYZIP5ALJBH6F" target="_blank">Fiskars Rotary Cutter</a>:<br />

<br />
It's like a pizza cutter for fabric. It cuts straight lines quickly and perfectly (if you use a ruler to guide you). I use them a lot for crafting and quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCXDVJN8MVHpZojTfIcF3rZJLh2uTK2VPBu8PeUvEqG6BZqB-3tsUiXqGRgvfUMImiszV8xxViqVu04-z1T_IEbns3npeZ9V5h-pVokNhQ4_6dctC77gLzSWs1SJNX_i1aI3CFIlJpBmkJ/s1600/scissors2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCXDVJN8MVHpZojTfIcF3rZJLh2uTK2VPBu8PeUvEqG6BZqB-3tsUiXqGRgvfUMImiszV8xxViqVu04-z1T_IEbns3npeZ9V5h-pVokNhQ4_6dctC77gLzSWs1SJNX_i1aI3CFIlJpBmkJ/s1600/scissors2.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Whatever scissors I'm using, they have to be sharp. A dull pair of scissors can really mangle your fabric and give you hand cramps! If you're using inexpensive scissors, replace them once cutting starts to become labored. If you've got fancy scissors, have them sharpened regularly. I get mine sharpened by a pro for $5 a pair.<br />
<br />
What kind of scissors do you have in your sewing room? Any favorite brands out there?<br />

The story is told from the first person perspective of Harper, who has a few qualms about the 'natural order' of things in her hometown. Last weekend, I got to spend some quality time with Ruby (my bff's teenage girl-child), and we hauled out the craft supplies and sat in front of the tv re-watching our favourite episodes of <i>Raising Hope. </i>One of the projects that we fell in love with is this duct tape flower pencil-topper (<a href="http://whatwillwedotoday.com/2011/11/19/duct-tape-flowers/" target="_blank">diy here!</a>). This one was relatively easy, and tonnes of fun for both of us. </div>

Apparently, Ruby REALLY liked this, because she continued making flowers after I left, and then fell asleep clutching her craft supplies (pretty much the most adorable thing ever). </div>

It's really a lot of fun. And maybe it'll make up for the fact that I don't take as many pictures for my blog as I'd like to!<br />
<br />
Here's a doodle list of what I ate yesterday:<br />

Lately, stocking up the shop has been a top priority--I know Christmas is still super-far away, but indie-biz owners everywhere are starting to prepare. I've been ordering new fabrics and adding lots of new stuff for fall and winter. The Hosta design (with the big, leaf-shaped flap) is my personal fave for the fall and winter, because it has a little extra coverage to keep your feet toasty. Over the next couple months I hope to be sewing all sorts of new stuff, including new baby booties (the selection in the shop has been pretty limited for quite some time)!</div>

What colors and textures are you looking forward to this fall?</div>

chronicles a young man's grief over the loss of his brother while he learns to cope with the onset of schizophrenia.<br />
<br />
<b>Setting:</b> Modern day Bristol, England<br />
<br />
<b>Main Character:</b> Matthew Homes, age 18, and his illness.<br />
<br />
<b>Themes:</b> grief, family, mental illness, coming of age, writing and storytelling<br />
<br />
<b>What I loved:</b><br />
<br />
Filer does a fantastic job of evoking a sense of empathy. The story is told from the first person perspective of Matthew Homes, and the fact that he has schizophrenia has a huge impact on that perspective. I think that the reason the first person POV is so important in this novel is because it allows the reader to imagine what it would be like to see the world as someone with schizophrenia might see it--to imagine the frustrations and the triumphs of everyday life, when managing your mind is a full-time job.<br />
<br />
"I should say that I am not a nice person" is the perfect first sentence for this novel, because a large part of Matt's struggle is with the impact of his illness on his loved ones. There are times when he is truly mean and downright selfish, and the fact that it's hard for his family and friends to be around him is not lost on him. "Mental illness" he says "turns people inwards . . . It keeps us forever trapped by the pain of our own minds" (277).<br />
<br />
Everyone has their battles, to be sure. I think that the gut-wrenching thing about mental illness is that the thing you're struggling against isn't external. You can't can't necessarily point towards a villain or circumstance outside of yourself. At one point, a care worker at Matt's mental health facility tells him the he is is own worst enemy, something that is painfully obvious to him: "Of course I'm my own worst enemy. That's the whole problem" (231).<br />
<br />
Ugh, I expended like 250 ml of tears. That said, Filer leaves room for humor and suspense, and even if you're not passionate about the heavy themes, it is a really great story.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
It might be said that I go through my fair share of notebooks. I really like the ones with sewn binding (like <a href="http://www.moleskine.com/en/collections/model/product/set-of-2-evernote-ruled-journals-with-smart-stickers-pocket" target="_blank">moleskins</a>) because they're slim and light. I kind of like the battered look they get around the edges after a while, and the fact that they don't have too many pages (next notebook, please).<br />
<br />
<div>
While I was in school, I made my own with card-stock covers, and just used my sewing machine to bind them up the center. But I've been wanting a slightly more sturdy cover--more sturdy that I should subject my sewing machine to, so I had to figure out a relatively simple way to bind them by hand. Easy peasy, really. All you need to do is make a lockstitch binding (like the one your average sewing machine makes) by hand. Here's how it's done:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Materials </div>
<div>
- Bristol Board for the cover--I just asked for it at my local print and stationery store (or use cardstock, or scrap cardboard from a cereal box, cut to a standard 5.5"x11" letter-size)</div>
<div>
- Approximately 20 sheets of printer paper for the pages</div>
<div>
- Thread--I used the heavy upholstery kind, but you can just double up some regular thread if you prefer</div>
<div>
- Pushpin</div>
<div>
- Handful of Binder Clips</div>
<div>
- Pencil</div>
<div>
- Ruler--if you have a quilting ruler, they work like a charm.</div>
<div>
- Corkboard--if you don't have one, use a pile of scrap cardboard.</div>
<div>
- Scissors</div>
<div>
- Exacto Knife (optional)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtO9ouViIkV3rAI3gjwmJWmjSipVUBuG-brA7cUDCM31yitYw6fqHJnV-RFeZPwZ5bYX63nl5KIQnAPmZYzfmlKusp4kyOQzhtdKdCHxoDPjOBzKOgykB26pZcbctSA36nvPFATnXBV_xt/s1600/binding1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtO9ouViIkV3rAI3gjwmJWmjSipVUBuG-brA7cUDCM31yitYw6fqHJnV-RFeZPwZ5bYX63nl5KIQnAPmZYzfmlKusp4kyOQzhtdKdCHxoDPjOBzKOgykB26pZcbctSA36nvPFATnXBV_xt/s1600/binding1.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. The first step is to decorate your cover! I drew my by hand, but you can use stamps, stickers, stencils, or whatever you fancy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Draw a straight line down the middle (5.5" from the edge if you're using regular letter-sized paper and cover). If you don't have a quilting ruler, measure 5.5" from the edge across the top, middle, and bottom of the page. Then draw a straight line with your ruler to connect the marks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzK5gIFqhJCQEYGzZRQGwiCUMszqd0kJGuJAg28G_R2USUTBxbVXBvCaS1eVdBvzib_ZJjxHiWu8WpsKj5JhNVplDE9b6lgEfKy7LeuHjE4hyphenhyphenGlV-16l2xYVtZ1pGtbWE_Om7tbYWFwuma/s1600/binding2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzK5gIFqhJCQEYGzZRQGwiCUMszqd0kJGuJAg28G_R2USUTBxbVXBvCaS1eVdBvzib_ZJjxHiWu8WpsKj5JhNVplDE9b6lgEfKy7LeuHjE4hyphenhyphenGlV-16l2xYVtZ1pGtbWE_Om7tbYWFwuma/s1600/binding2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Make a visible mark an eighth of an inch from the top of the line and then mark every .5" down the rest of the line. It won't end up perfectly an eighth inch from the bottom, but unless it's going to drive you nuts, you can just modify the space between the last few marks. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin74Uar6aVgrym9NVnzFpePsVjmIACjoe3NMifLeNW3FKbMenBzungMpuoFKRz3L0CnrxXlodQZnOIF0a70jC-1VEKTxaTvxgS64_p1ozm09k7uPeH4pUx2z1y5IOZ3VEl556l6rFnZ72O/s1600/binding3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin74Uar6aVgrym9NVnzFpePsVjmIACjoe3NMifLeNW3FKbMenBzungMpuoFKRz3L0CnrxXlodQZnOIF0a70jC-1VEKTxaTvxgS64_p1ozm09k7uPeH4pUx2z1y5IOZ3VEl556l6rFnZ72O/s1600/binding3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Stack your cover (right side up) on top of your printer paper and make sure all the sides are flush. Then clip it all together with your binder clips to make sure it stays flush while you're binding. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgafbUa43XbNr5sets-ZOz8pSNFwX7uXjj7CPAdyfwX6k7uQTKq-ZrG6w2XBsymQd6nL26KP5bCmsM6YkCsnRHLghn0H7rS6aBDdmlu7lQpXcLG8wIj0r_B8R6-Aj41XqFWrdUcv_PwkDNN/s1600/binding6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgafbUa43XbNr5sets-ZOz8pSNFwX7uXjj7CPAdyfwX6k7uQTKq-ZrG6w2XBsymQd6nL26KP5bCmsM6YkCsnRHLghn0H7rS6aBDdmlu7lQpXcLG8wIj0r_B8R6-Aj41XqFWrdUcv_PwkDNN/s1600/binding6.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. You're going to use a<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockstitch" target="_blank"> lockstitch</a> to bind the notebook. First off, you need to measure out your thread. You need three times the length of the binding, plus about three inches.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
clip the thread to the bottom middle of the notebook, leaving a three inch tail. This will be your 'lock thread' for the binding. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKhcsyhJ7HTR2Xd9Xqec5WLFk3QaVIUhTbAcupjtEmyOPEAcFSMctuLiZpQ5TnPIcbg1_V2MdEg2RwAI8bl2xh99lNSUJM7-xyxKD82E8ddpwj6yDUdNGV7iyv0DUjbx0pEPudHQWsFmuW/s1600/bindingc3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKhcsyhJ7HTR2Xd9Xqec5WLFk3QaVIUhTbAcupjtEmyOPEAcFSMctuLiZpQ5TnPIcbg1_V2MdEg2RwAI8bl2xh99lNSUJM7-xyxKD82E8ddpwj6yDUdNGV7iyv0DUjbx0pEPudHQWsFmuW/s1600/bindingc3.jpg" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
Thread your needle, draw it through the top-most hole, and pull it tight. (As you go along, you want to be careful that you pull the thread tight enough so that there is no slack, but not so tight that the end of the thread gets pulled from the binder clip.) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKNjIUhu7Ym2Q1iV025NECXCcNspp_622Mw15jhoi12RkRkDZrGo_CtwBrOP3Ch9W6OCU4W8tC41bALboQ4777H-eagiirLvEShPn5viGrBB0b3uIo2D3X8UvPVQW-LtHXFlHHZSEoqhs0/s1600/binding11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKNjIUhu7Ym2Q1iV025NECXCcNspp_622Mw15jhoi12RkRkDZrGo_CtwBrOP3Ch9W6OCU4W8tC41bALboQ4777H-eagiirLvEShPn5viGrBB0b3uIo2D3X8UvPVQW-LtHXFlHHZSEoqhs0/s1600/binding11.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, flip the book over so that you're looking at the front cover. Thread the needle down through the second hole (I did mine upside down, which probably looks confusing--either way is fine, as long as you start at the opposite end from where you've clipped the end of your thread)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1cqYpoXWEL8tWxwnMqbitrFrhOt_hKRjQaENnqZNyeIUNNvR-1rH7bgoemxLRXluzPvIToHFfiOHMVh3pjT8zaPakMP7_WBIrlZt3lihI8FoBdi3dKhuBIlCv_mfauCkbZxVLWskPSeWs/s1600/binding12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1cqYpoXWEL8tWxwnMqbitrFrhOt_hKRjQaENnqZNyeIUNNvR-1rH7bgoemxLRXluzPvIToHFfiOHMVh3pjT8zaPakMP7_WBIrlZt3lihI8FoBdi3dKhuBIlCv_mfauCkbZxVLWskPSeWs/s1600/binding12.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Flip the book so that you're looking at the inside, and pull your thread through so that there is no slack. Pay attention to which side of the lock thread you're coming up on. Thread the needle back through the same hole, but (this is important) make sure you're coming down on the other side of the lock thread. This way, your main thread will catch on the lock thread and make a stitch instead of just coming back out the other side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Continue making your stitches in this way until you get to the last hole. Check to make sure your stitches are even. The lock thread should be running straight down the centre of the book without any slack and without being pulled through to the front of the book. </div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the last stitch, you are going to draw the thread through from the front of the book to the back, and then unclip the lock thread and tie the two ends of the thread together in a knot, as close as you can to the paper. Double (or triple) your knot before clipping off the ends of the thread.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkLozF-ZxTtQVbmG558VEiDWlooC0OBzCd46Su2-UoRwh-UnqOWTEkjliYkiGXt3lKA3QH7DrpgZ2ApyZBCXZyZ_HcCIX7DyvvhO-qUu5DiAWD04iFYeiKL1qABo1Wn4xOUbkJTzsZwiw/s1600/binding18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkLozF-ZxTtQVbmG558VEiDWlooC0OBzCd46Su2-UoRwh-UnqOWTEkjliYkiGXt3lKA3QH7DrpgZ2ApyZBCXZyZ_HcCIX7DyvvhO-qUu5DiAWD04iFYeiKL1qABo1Wn4xOUbkJTzsZwiw/s1600/binding18.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Now fold the book in half. It will naturally fold along the binding, but be sure that the pages are flush along the top and bottom. Applying a bit of pressure, run the handles of your scissors along the binding edge to flatten the crease.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjsbyq12nmAyb7bfqUndD1VGPs98ch0hmyqRLC-p1TOJj32IwAsCl1UuRu3QY_ojBo2pKvsK7JnkwEbjYzKN_58Ob1IkNYGipmPDop1iaBj5QMcHeylKx7yze7Z1J2cR3JNkHloh0EUGtU/s1600/binding19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjsbyq12nmAyb7bfqUndD1VGPs98ch0hmyqRLC-p1TOJj32IwAsCl1UuRu3QY_ojBo2pKvsK7JnkwEbjYzKN_58Ob1IkNYGipmPDop1iaBj5QMcHeylKx7yze7Z1J2cR3JNkHloh0EUGtU/s1600/binding19.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
8. Now, the pages along the top and bottom of the book should be flush, but they will be sticking out a little from under the cover along the side. If you would like, you can trim them using your ruler and exacto knife. Make sure your blade is sharp and be careful to hold your ruler in place so that you get a straight flush cut. (It's really easy to get a ragged cut at this point, so consider the risk before you put your knife to the page.) You won't be able to go through all the pages at once. Just keep going over it until you're through the stack.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZBMKFqU2EBZezZ8frKYiv5Kde8ATCIyQdCWT3ulF4zJdB9L5w0UsYHCG93_z_R5ceUkgWCs8D2n4CIr7I0t8v28uUiBGKah_DJrE4CfNYPYixXOzjLQ3w4AWmwyiGvrGr-2ZhZghV_y-/s1600/binding22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZBMKFqU2EBZezZ8frKYiv5Kde8ATCIyQdCWT3ulF4zJdB9L5w0UsYHCG93_z_R5ceUkgWCs8D2n4CIr7I0t8v28uUiBGKah_DJrE4CfNYPYixXOzjLQ3w4AWmwyiGvrGr-2ZhZghV_y-/s1600/binding22.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's it--you've got your very own hand-bound notebook! You can use this technique for various soft covers. I save my favorite birthday cards to use as notebook covers, and simply cut my printer paper to the same size. You can do the same with children's soft-cover books too. Sometimes I photocopy my favorite fabrics onto cardstock and use that as the cover. You may have already dreamed up an alternative of you own!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anxiety is a pretty chronic thing for me, so when I heard these lines (belonging to Jane Austen's character Mr. Edward Gardiner) while listening to the <i>Pride and Prejudice </i>audiobook, they kinda seemed like a take-away. Granted, in their context, they smack a little of false reassurance . . . but in the context of my everyday life, it's pretty sound advice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Along the same lines, I ran across this post titled <a href="http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2014/07/brace-for-impact.html" target="_blank">"Brace for Impact"</a> on Seth Godin's blog. It's a good, brief read about, you know, just generally expending too much energy on preparing for the worst thing that could happen (but in all likelihood won't). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think Seth Godin and Mr. Gardiner would get along like a house on fire. Either that or I've been looking for a chance to use that expression--get along like a house on fire--and I finally just decided to bust it out whether it was a good fit or not. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCdXdW5JWYqboyEVWLUN8vmf6CwMP-Sje6Ny7VR4Y6teeVqr_ds1U5DpGX6A7RuAR3UXrFjGdECxA6BjY5gGGAyGwA8zg27IonM0MLRmOyRjndCYPM8tbxKC8bW8eoiWhXJYE6tQXU9hyphenhypheny/s1600/ferris+beach.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCdXdW5JWYqboyEVWLUN8vmf6CwMP-Sje6Ny7VR4Y6teeVqr_ds1U5DpGX6A7RuAR3UXrFjGdECxA6BjY5gGGAyGwA8zg27IonM0MLRmOyRjndCYPM8tbxKC8bW8eoiWhXJYE6tQXU9hyphenhypheny/s1600/ferris+beach.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
While I was on Vacation, I really took a bite out of my reading list (which is less of a list, and more of a <a href="http://molipopsays.blogspot.ca/2014/04/birthday-goals.html" target="_blank">goal </a>to read at least 12 novels this year). <i>Ferris Beach </i>was one of my vacation reads, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a coming of age novel, which is my jam. Funny, how I never get sick of the genre.<br />
<br />
The novel chronicles Katherine (Kitty) Burns's coming of age in early 1970's North Carolina. Growing up for Kitty is kind of like waking up from a series of daydreams. The people that she idealizes often fail her miserably, while others surprise her with genuine kindness. The author, Jill McCorkle once said of her writing: "I like to populate with stereotypes . . . because I know there's a good chance that as soon as these people start walking and talking and thinking that they will step beyond the boundaries" (cited in<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-McCorkle-Contemporary-American-Literature/dp/1570033501" target="_blank"> Bennet</a>, 9), and I think this strategy is part of what makes <i>Ferris Beach</i> both enjoyable and thought provoking.<br />
<br />
The story takes place during a transitional period in Kitty's old-school Southern neighborhood, where the introduction of "split-levels" and an influx of new neighbors challenges inhabitants that are striving to perform with the decorum and polite reserve of a particular social class. The new neighbors (particularly Kitty's new best friend's mother) often behave in ways that shake up the current order, and this dynamic has a profound effect on the development of Kitty's teenage identity. Throughout the course of the novel, Kitty's ideals and fantasies give way to a reality that alternates grim and triumphant (kind of like, well, reality).<br />
<br />
Top 3 Favorite Things About <i>Ferris Beach </i><br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>The main character. One of the things I love about her is that she isn't boy crazy. She has a handle on her relationships with guys. She <i>has a say</i> in her relationships with guys. I mean, she's got a case of the teenage insecurities, but it doesn't make her desperate, and she's pretty deliberate about what she gets into. I admire that. I wish I was like that as a teen!</li>
<li>The sad-factor. There's heaps of sad stuff. There are troubling class issues. Good and bad folks die. People get hurt. I really do value having my heart broken vicariously in fiction-town.</li>
<li>The emphasis on the relationship between individual development and place. It's what I wrote my thesis on, and while I was so over it for the last year or two, this book made it fascinating again!</li>

Somehow I walked away with "Chutes Too Narrow" stuck in my head. There was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7-DjDF1MRM" target="_blank">a new Shins<i> </i>song</a> for the new film. But somehow I still have the old ones in my head.<br />
<br />

<br />
So, naturally, I dug out my old Shins albums (instead of listening to them on Youtube like a normal person), and you know what? I still love them so much. Is that way too uncool? I'm starting to understand folks that get stuck in their glory days--you know, walking around listening to music and sporting fashion from decades gone by. It's a lot of effort to keep up.<br />
<i><br /></i>
Plus, lots of the old stuff is just unbeatable. <i>And </i>there's the nostalgia factor--<i>Chutes Too Narrow is </i>packed with nostalgia. It brings me back (not <i>that</i> far really) to my first summer of tree planting.<br />
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Some albums just do that--especially if you listen to them all summer long on repeat. It's really not a very summery album, but I was totally down with that. In the summer of 2005 (two years late to the game) I fancied myself a poetic person (and also, I fancied a poetic person), so I was into lyrical stuff. And, in fact, I read all the lyrics in the jacket (multiple times). The Shins do contraries well--like awkward and sexy, and I'm a big fan of that in general.<br />
<br />
Also, I was super-awkward, but I had dreams of being cool. And this was the golden age of Seth Cohen. Uncool was the new cool. Indie was everything. The hipster apocalypse was on the horizon. "Pink Bullets" was my jam.</div>

Miracle Beach, BCLast month I took a week off and headed to Vancouver Island to kick back, camp, and catch up with old friends. I travelled around the Island a fair bit, staying near Campbell River at Miracle Beach for a couple nights, in Victoria for a few nights, and at the China Beach campsite in the Juan de Fuca provincial park for a night. I took about lots of photos and saw lots of stuff so I'll blog in a few installments, starting with Miracle Beach and Victoria!<br />

Miracle Beach was crazy pretty. There's a giant sandy beach packed with sand dollars (most of them still alive) and a super lush trail alongside the estuary. I remember the crazy amount of slugs from when I was a kid vacationing on the Island. They used to freak me out, but being slightly more logical as an adult, I know now that I can outrun any one of them if need be. Here is a shaking and blurry video of one snacking on a leaf.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/6OlBM9C2SSs?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The park is pretty family oriented, so there were lots of kiddos (lots of laughing, playing, screaming, and crying). Being in a family-centric park somehow made me feel a little safer at night for my very first solo camping experience. Probably a misguided assumption, since I know from tv that serial killers are never who you expect them to be. But all you could hear after 10pm was crackling fires, and I slept like only a carefree grown-up on vacation can.<br />

One of the the many perks of living with my folks is that I have a great yard. Normally my mum and dad kind of hog the yard-work. Tending garden is mum's top favorite thing to do in the summer, and my dad is a lawn-care perfectionist. But they've been away on vacation lots this month, so I've been getting in lots of quality time with the garden. It's heaps of work, but when July rolls around it starts looking (and tasting) pretty spectacular. </div>

Remember that time I started posting <a href="http://molipopsays.blogspot.ca/2014/04/birthday-goals.html" target="_blank">my goals for my 32ndyear</a>? Well, the deadline to apply for the Artisans of the North craft fair has

In May, I read <i>The Caretaker </i>by Ranjit Singh. In June, I
read <i>Gifts </i>by Ursula K. Le Guin. And so far this month I’ve devoured <i>Voices

but so far my top favourite has been <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13419252-daughters-who-walk-this-path" target="_blank">Daughters Who Walk the Path</a> </i>because
it explores a lot of really heavy issues like ethnic discrimination, gender
discrimination, rape culture, and political engagement without oversimplifying.
And <i>‘</i>cause women-to-woman relationships (sisters, moms, aunts, and
